Bloemfontein - The corruption trial against two Free State MECs is expected to get underway in court 17 at the Bloemfontein Regional Court on February 13 next year.

Health MEC Benny Malakoane and Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation MEC Mmathabo Leeto are charged alongside former Matjhabeng Chief Financial Officer Louis de Bruin, his personal assistant Leona Nel, Oupa Molete, Hendrik Burger and two companies.

The accused allegedly received kickbacks worth R13 million for irregularly awarded contracts in Matjhabeng local municipality in the period from October 2007 to June 2008.

Malakoane was municipal manager at the time and Leeto the executive mayor.

The accused were first arrested by the Hawks in July 2013 and released on bail. The case was postponed today.
