Virginia - The driver and assistant driver of an Intercape Bus on route from Johannesburg to Cape Town were killed on impact when the Sleepliner collided with a stationary truck near Virginia in the Free State last night.

Virginia - The driver and assistant driver of an Intercape bus on route from Johannesburg to Cape Town were killed on impact when the Sleepliner collided with a stationary truck near Virginia in the Free State last night.

Intercape Managing Director Johan Ferreira said in a statement there were 54 passengers and three crew on the bus when the collision occurred around 11pm, about 7km south of Virginia. 

Ferreira confirmed the death of the two Intercape personnel and says only three passengers remain hospitalized, with the rest discharged and transported to their final destinations. He has sent condolences to all those affected. 

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring earlier reported four deaths. The toll has since been revised to three in a statement. Meiring describes the chaos at the scene the accident [podcast].
 
Intercape insists only two people died in the incident. OFM is awaiting final clarification from police.
