UFS happy to have hosted EFF conference─── REFILWE GAESWE 05:53 Thu, 18 Dec 2014
Bloemfontein - The University of the Free State (UFS) says it is very happy to have hosted the Economic Freedom Fighters' (EFF) elective conference with the same energy, excitement and selflessness that they showed to the ANC when they hosted their conference in 2012.
The university’s acting rector Choice Makhetha says they're pleased that everything went well.
The first EFF National People’s Assembly was held from 13 to 16 December at the Bloemfontein campus.
When OFM News asked Makhetha about an incident in which disgruntled Gauteng members burned the party’s candidate lists outside the university’s Callie Human Hall, she explained that the event proved what politics was all about.
Makhetha thanked the EFF for their discipline and professionalism. She wished EFF and other political parties well for the upcoming 2016 local elections.
Makhetha emphasized that the party should be steadfast in prioritising education as most of their members are young people who are capable of studying further.
“The fact that the EFF paid the required amount for the use of the university’s venues in full before the congress commenced, bears testimony to this. For the past two months, the UFS’s working team worked closely with the EFF’s logistics team to thoroughly plan for a smooth and successful National People’s Assembly. It is with great excitement that I can report that all premises of the UFS have been left the way they were found on arrival; no damage to any property and no littering,” said Makhetha.
UFS stated that it would continue to host political parties, interest groups, associations and others in their diversity, provided there is availability of venues, events are held outside the academic period and payment is received well ahead of time.
As a public institution of higher learning, the university says they have a responsibility to promote democracy and help deepen the principles thereof.
UFS believes that a university is the perfect platform for differing views and diverse political formations to find expression.
