NW farm attackers remain at large─── DANE BEISHEIM 15:31 Thu, 22 Jan 2015
Brits - No one has been arrested yet following the assault of an elderly North West couple.
Eighty-year old Hannes van der Merwe and his 76-year old wife Annatjie were attacked on their farm in the De Wildt area near Brits on Tuesday.
Three men overpowered Van der Merwe while he was pumping water from a borehole. They bound the couple with cables before assaulting and burning both with a hot iron all over their bodies.
The suspects fled on foot with the couple’s groceries and clothes in a wheelbarrow. They also took several fire arms.
Police spokesperson Thulani Ngubane has urged the public to come forward with information that may lead to arrests.
The Van der Merwe’s meanwhile remain in the Mediclinic Brits, where, according to hospital spokesperson Retha Mostert, they are responding well to treatment.
