Kimberley - A total of 15 female taxi drivers in the Northern Cape will show their mettle when they compete in the first Northern Cape Provincial Taxi Driver Competition to take place in Kimberley at the weekend.

The competition is hosted by the provincial Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison in conjunction with the South African National Taxi council (Santaco). Head of the department, Steven Jonkers, says the competition focuses on road safety in an effort to improve the taxi industry in the province. A total of 15 male drivers from all five districts in the province have also qualified for the competition. According to Jonkers the competition forms part of the department’s vision to ensure safe, secure and sustainable transport for all. He says a workshop will also be held during the competition in which the skills of drivers as well as their vehicles will be tested. Christal-Lize Muller/OFM News
