• 1935: SAA, inaugurated the previous year, takes over South-West African Airways which has since 1932 been providing a weekly air-mail service between Windhoek and Kimberley.
• 1974: Onkgopotse Abram Tiro, a leader of the South African Students' Organisation, is killed by a parcel bomb near Gaborone, Botswana.
• 1994: President De Klerk announces the withdrawal of the Internal Stability Units (ISU) from the East Rand townships of Kathlehong and Thokoza and their replacement by the South African Defence Force (SADF).
• 1956: Hague Daily Newspaper reveals war crimes of Hague mayor Schokking.
• 1959: Swiss men vote against voting rights for women.
• 1965: Martin Luther King Jr. & 700 demonstrators arrested in Selma Ala.

• 2006: The Sowetan turns 25.

• 1932: Bradman made 299 vs South Africa, runs out partner going for 300th.
• 1965: David Callaghan, SA cricketer (all-rounder in one-day matches 1992), is born.
• 1971: James Alexander Joseph Christy (66), South African cricket player in 10 tests, dies in Durban.
• 1959: US female Figure Skating championship won by Carol Heiss.
• 1961: Mackay & Kline hang on for 100 mins for cricket draw vs West Indies.
