Farmers 'responsible for their own safety' | News Article

Bloemfontein - Free State Agriculture has made available a checklist for farmers to evaluate their existing safety measures in order to establish if there is room for improvement in their personal safety.

The organisation's Jane Buys says the list was compiled as a measuring tool containing check points and information about safety structures which farmers should put in place in their immediate environment.

According to her the involvement of farmers in existing rural safety plans in conjunction with police and good communication between neighbours are also addressed in the checklist.

Farmworkers' involvement in safety issues are also measured.

This comes in light of the increasing number of farm attacks in the Free State since last year.

In the most recent attack Ronald and Ciska Nel were attacked and robbed by three armed men on their farm at Virginia early yesterday morning. The couple were not seriously injured. The men fled on foot. Police say no arrests have been made yet.
