Council for Geoscience confirms earthquake in Welkom─── CHRISTAL-LIZE MULLER 16:44 Mon, 02 Mar 2015
Welkom - The Council for Geoscience has confirmed that an earthquake measuring 3.9 magnitude on the Richter Scale took place in Welkom and surrounding areas last night.
This comes after residents shared their experiences on social networks after the quake hit the city after 9 pm last night.
Tremors were also felt as far as Bultfontein.
According to the council, the magnitude may change after more data becomes available.
A resident from Riebeeckstad in Welkom describe the quake as horrific and says his children became hysterical when the quake hit the area.
The has council appealed to the public to complete a questionnaire on its website.
The questionnaire allows them to create maps of shaking intensity distribution and gather information for research purposes.
Meanwhile three separate earthquakes took place this morning after 1 am in the Carletonville area. The first quake measured 3.8 magnitude followed by another quake with a magnitude of 3.2. The third quake measured 2.0 in magnitude.
