NWU takes note of letter from suspended ISC member | News Article

Potchefstroom - The North West University has taken note of a legal letter from a member of the Institutional Student Council in which the NWU is asked to withdraw her suspension by the ISC.

The NWU’s Louis Jacobs says the university is aware of the conditions stated in the letter. He says after an internal investigation the university’s legal office compiled a legal opinion which will be released soon.

This comes after the chairperson of the Student Council of the Potchefstroom Campus and member of the ISC, Monica van Schalkwyk, was suspended. According to her lawyer, Werner Human, her suspension was wrongfully executed by the ISC. No valid reason was provided.

Human told OFM News earlier he appealed in a letter on behalf of Van Schalkwyk to Vice Chancellor, Dan Kgwadi, that the university should withdraw her suspension and re-instate her as a ISC-member by tomorrow.

Human says it is not clear what the reason behind her suspension is. It is alleged that she disagreed with other ISC-members from the Vaal Triangle and Mafikeng campuses about an amendment of the constitution regarding decision-making by representatives from all three campuses.
