Protestors set alight several properties near Brits | News Article

Brits - Residents of Jericho near Brits in North West set alight a councillor's house as well as a tribal council office last night after protests over poor water supply erupted yesterday.

North West police spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, says this came after residents of Jericho and Letlhabile blocked roads in the area yesterday and closed schools, clinics and businesses. They also looted a number of foreign owned stores. Four people were arrested and are expected to appear in court soon on charges of public violence.

Mokgwabone says the tribal council office was partially burnt while the damage to the councillor’s house is substantial. He says the situation is calm although a road leading to Brits is still blocked.

In Letlhabile, roads leading to various destinations, including Brits, are still barricaded. He says the police are monitoring the situation. The communities claim they've been experiencing water shortages since last week.
