NW man shot dead allegedly after looting foreign-owned shops during protests─── DANE BEISHEIM 10:53 Wed, 18 Mar 2015
Brits - A man has been shot and killed in Maboloka village in North West, allegedly in retaliation for this week's looting of foreign-owned shops during protests over water shortages.
Police spokesperson Sabata Mokgwabone says two men allegedly went to the victim’s home last night and accused him of looting their shops before one of the men shot the victim. The suspects fled the scene in a car.
Protests over water shortages started in Letlhabile and Jericho near Brits on Sunday and spread to neighbouring Maboloka yesterday, where several foreign-owned shops were looted.
Mokgwabone says police are investigating the matter.
Mokgwabone says the situation in the affected areas around Brits seems calmer today.
Residents have blockaded roads, while a council member's home and the offices of a tribal council were set alight. The regional office of the Department of Education was also damaged during the protests.
