Free State MEC to appeal his sentence | News Article

Bloemfontein - Free State MEC for Police, Roads and Transport, Butana Khompela will appeal his 30 day jail sentence, suspended for five years, meted out to him for contempt of court.

Khompela was sentenced by the Bloemfontein High Court yesterday after he ignored a previous court order to bring order and stability to the Fouriesburg/Lesotho taxi routes.

In April last year the court ruled that Khompela should not restrict legal taxi associations from lawfully operating along the border route.

The associations however claim members are still being attacked and harassed in full view of provincial traffic officers.

Khompela’s spokesperson Hillary Mophethe.

Last week another judge ruled that the MEC neglected to take necessary action against traffic officers who are prohibiting legal permit holders from operating.
