Memorial buildings have lost their mystic heritage and purpose | News Article

Bloemfontein - Most memorial buildings like Freedom Park and the Apartheid Museum have lost their mystic heritage and purpose.

This is according to human rights activist and former Constitutional Court Judge Albie Sachs during his “Sites of memory, sites of conscience” public lecture at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein on Thursday.

He says the country needs historical sites that will bring to life the history of our country.

The lecture formed part of a series that focuses on how the creative arts represent trauma, and a way to open up the possibility of healing.

The lecture is part of a research project led by Professor Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela funded by the Mellon Foundation.

Gobodo-Madikizela says they chose Judge Sachs because he is no stranger to trauma. At the same time Judge Sachs is a big advocate of healing and transformation.
