Potchefstroom - The SA Academy for Science and Art has awarded its annual honours to individuals who have made significant contributions to their respective fields.
One of this year's winners was Gerhard van Huyssteen, of the North West University's Potchefstroom campus.
Van Huyssteen received the Stals Prize for multi- and interdisciplinary teamwork. He came into consideration for the award due to his considerable involvement in interdisciplinary research and publications along with computer scientists, engineers and technology developers. As Van Huyssteen explains, his research focuses on language technology.
Other central South African recipients include Jacques Petzer from the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the NWU who won the Havenga Prize for Physical sciences; Marianna Botes from the University of the Free State who won the Protea Book House Prize for best History Thesis in Afrikaans; and Bloemfontein’s filmmaker Boet Troskie who received a special Honorary Award.
