• 1863: The first tramway company in Cape Town, the 'Cape Town and Green Point Tramway Company', commences operations with a horse-drawn service running on rails from the foot of Adderley Street and out along Somerset Road to Green Point.
• 1876: The Midlands Ladies' Seminary, forerunner of the College of Education, is founded in Graaff-Reinet.
• 1888: The British ship Fairholine, en route from Calcutta to New York, runs ashore to the east of Buffels Bay, Cape south coast.
• 1910: Max Gordon, industrial chemist and trade unionist, is born in Cape Town.
• 1913: The South African Police is founded.
• 1922: The South African Naval Service is founded. With the ships the Protea, Sonneblom and Immortelle it formed the nucleus of a South African navy.
• 1957: The Rondalia Touring Club, a motoring organisation, is founded.
• 1960: Ayanda Bam, executive chair of Kuyasa Mining, the first Black owned mining house in SA, is born in King Williams' Town, Transkei.
• 1972: The names of the four 'homelands' are changed: from Basotho ha Borwa (Southern Sotho) to Basotho-Qwaqwa; from Tswanaland to Bophuthatswana; from Machangana to Gazankulu; from Zululand to KwaZulu.
• 1977: Pik Botha, SA ambassador in the USA, returns to South Africa and is appointed as Minister of Foreign Affairs.
• 2002: The South African Navy (SAN) is 80 years old.

• 1875: Edgar Wallace, SA author and newspaper editor, is born in Greenwich, England.
• 1915: Catharina Felicia van Rees, musician who published the first collection of SA folk songs, dies in Gelderland, the Netherlands.
• 1927: The Schlesinger Organisation, with government approval, forms the African Broadcasting Corporation in Johannesburg, in which the three existing broadcasting organisations are incorporated.
• The Statue of Liberty used to have a reddish brown colour.
• The Statue of Liberty was intended for Egypt.
Fast Sports facts:
• More than 100 million people hold hunting licenses
• Ferenc Szisz from Romania, driving a Renault, won the first Formula One Grand Prix held at Le Mans, France in 1906.
• In his time, Michael Schumacher was the highest paid sportsman, ahead of Tiger Woods and Arnold Palmer. (Not including sponsorship endorsements.
