Two deceased believed to be part of ATM bombing syndicate─── CHRISTAL-LIZE MULLER 15:30 Tue, 31 Mar 2015
Odendaalsrus - Free State police suspect that two men who died in a shootout with police over the weekend in Odendaalsrus might be part of a syndicate involved in ATM bombings in the area.
On Saturday a vehicle with five armed occupants stopped next to police officers who were observing a bank in the CBD.
They started firing shots at the officers who returned fire. Police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, says two were found fatally wounded and three escaped with another vehicle. According to Thakeng the police officers, one of whom is a woman constable, sustained bullet wounds in both legs.
He says the original vehicle used to park next to the police officers was stolen in Gauteng.
Both officers are in a stable condition in hospital.
Thakeng has appealed to the public to contact their nearest police station with information.
