Potchefstroom - The role Helen Zille played in opposition politics cannot be overestimated. This is according to political commentator André Duvenhage, and follows Zille's announcement that she would not be eligible for re-election as leader of the party.
Duvenhage says Zille’s timing is interesting, in the sense that her announcement comes four weeks before the federal congress.
He says this small window leaves little opportunity for in-fighting and divisions to form in the party over a succession battle.
He says with Lindiwe Maziboko only returning to South Africa near the end of May, she is being marginalized as a contender for the top spot.
