North West dairy farmer guilty of animal cruelty─── DANE BEISHEIM 11:41 Mon, 20 Apr 2015
Koster - A dairy farmer from Koster in North West has been found guilty of animal cruelty.
Rasie de Jager of the Kortfontein dairy farm submitted an admission of guilt to the Court relating to the charges laid against him by the National Council of SPCAs. He was fined R2 000 and now has a criminal record.
The SPCA’s Farm Animal Protection Unit Manager, Andries Venter, says De Jager was charged following a series of incidents in 2013. Cattle were found with injuries to their backs and spines after they were transported from KwaZulu-Natal in a vehicle designed for calves.
Venter says in another instance, a cow was found without an eye, and no veterinary treatment had been given.
