Process of renaming NW province has just begun: analyst | News Article

Potchefstroom - A political commentator says the process of renaming the North West province to Moses Kotane has just begun.

Theo Venter's comments come after the ANC majority in the provincial legislature voted in favour of the motion yesterday.

The Speaker of the North West legislature, Suzan Dantjie, announced that 22 people voted for the name change and five against. The proposition will now be sent to the National Assembly, in accordance with the rules of the Constitution.

Venter says yesterday's motion was merely the beginning of the process. He says it is also subject to the input of many different role players and stakeholders, which will make the process a lengthy one.

The two main opposition parties in the province, the DA and EFF, have meanwhile vowed to continue to fight the proposed name change.

DA leader in North West, Chris Hattingh, says the ANC is merely trying to divert attention from crumbling service provision in the province, while the EFF says it will mobilise community members and host protests against the proposed name change.
