Law students: studying African language may soon be compulsory | News Article

Bloemfontein - New law students might have to study an African language as a compulsory subject if the Minister Justice and Correctional Services, Michael Masutha manages to get all universities on board with the idea.

The issue of the languages used in courts featured prominently during yesterday's Justice Department budget debate, to which the minister announced plans to investigate ways to promote the use of indigenous languages during court proceedings. Dean of the Faculty of Law at University of Free State, Professor Caroline Nicholson says the LLB curriculum is being reviewed and it would be beneficial for any student to learn an African language.
