Successor of NW police commissioner announced today | News Article

Potchefstroom - The successor of North West police commissioner, Zukiswa Mbombo, who came under scrutiny during the investigation and consequent commission of inquiry following the Marikana shootings – will be formally announced today at a handing over of the sword ceremony.

The ceremony will take place at the SAPS Officer’s Club in Potchefstroom. National Police Commissioner, Riah Phiyega, will be officially receiving the Sword of Command from the outgoing provincial commissioner. Thirty-four people died at the Lonmin platinum mine near Marikana in North West on 16 August 2012 when police tried to disperse striking miners. Ten people, including two policemen, were killed the previous week. During her testimony before the Farlam commission of inquiry into the Marikana shooting, Mbombo acknowledged that the police intervention had failed. Dane Beisheim/OFM News
