Durban - The Durban and Coast SPCA has opened a “kitty hotel” to accommodate nearly a dozen stray cats that have made the organisation a permanent home.

Placed outside an office block, the feline quarters come replete with climbing frames, hammocks, scratching posts and hidey holes.

General manager Caroline Smith said the idea was inspired by European cat cafes that give stray a place to relax.

“Ever since the upgrade to our cattery towards the end of 2013, we've wanted to provide similar facilities for our famous yard cats, the dozen or so waifs and strays that live permanently at our SPCA.”

“Each cat has his or her own sleeping box – perfect for those winter nights when the offices are closed and the humans have all gone home,” Smith said.

She said members of the public sponsor the upkeep of each resident feline, with three yard cats still searching benefactors.

“Charlotte, Thomas and Olivia are looking for sponsors. If you love cats and can commit to a monthly contribution of R100, please sponsor a cat now,” she said.
