Hijackings in the Free State decreasing | News Article

Bloemfontein - The number of reported hijackings in the Free State has decreased.

This according to the MEC of Police, Roads and Transport, Butana Komphela, who told OFM News yesterday that the number of hijackings especially in the Mangaung area have decreased compared to three years ago.

He says more hijackings took place over that period in local hotspots, including Kenneth Kaunda street, formerly Andries Pretorius street.

According to him truck hijackings on the N3 which were a huge problem are now being managed by police.

He says the number of hijackings at the University of the Free State, which previously spiraled out of control, have been curbed.

Police sent out a warning yesterday to motorists in the province to be on the lookout for criminals blocking roads with stones in an attempt to hijack vehicles.

This trend has occurred more frequently on the R702 from Bloemfontein to Dewetsdorp. A motorist travelling on the road at the weekend was approached by three attempted hijackers when he got out of his vehicle to remove objects which were blocking the road. The community however intervened and the hijackers fled the scene.
