Clean audits don't necessarily equate to functionality - Nel─── 13:13 Fri, 03 Jul 2015
Kimberley - Receiving a clean audit does not mean your municipality is functional.
This is the message deputy minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Andries Nel, had for delegates at the Northern Cape local government summit in Kimberley.
Nel said if municipalities pay attention to service delivery issues it would positively change the image of municipalities in the public eye. He said municipalities are however sometimes so busy chasing clean audits that they neglect to deliver basic services.
Nel also said South Africans should realise that it will take decades more to build local government institutions into what they need to be and what the constitution envisages them to be.
