Mangaung Metro implements water restrictions | News Article

Bloemfontein - The Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality has taken a decision to start implementing water restrictions in Mangaung for the first time in 32 years.

Democratic Alliance councillor Rossouw Botes says the party managed to put pressure on the municipality to implement measures to save water.

He says if council failed to take action, the municipality could face more serious water shortages in future. Botes was speaking at a special council meeting in Bloemfontein yesterday.

This after he said on Thursday that Bloemfontein could face water restrictions as the Welbedag dam, which supplies the Bloem Water reservoir, is expected to dry up before the first spring rains.

Botes said the water situation this year is worse than in 2014, when the Mangaung Metro had to in bring water from the Katse Dam in Lesotho at huge cost.

The city last had water restrictions in 1983.
