Mangaung’s refuse collection not up to standard: DA | News Article

Bloemfontein - The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Free State says the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality's door-to-door refuse collection service is not up to standard.

The DA’s Hardie Viviers says there is an over-reliance on refuse collection service providers. He says that residents are dissatisfied with the service they experience and perceive on a daily basis.

Viviers was speaking at a special council meeting in Bloemfontein on Friday. He explained that the municipal audit review indicated that there were serious delays in collecting refuse and that a physical verification indicated instances where refuse was not collected according to the scheduled times.

Viviers said when the audit committee inquired about those instances, municipal management allegedly indicated that there was limited capacity of some service providers.

He questioned how incompetent service providers could be appointed to deliver an important service in Mangaung, adding that it was also alarming that 67 percent of the budgeted overtime money for refuse collection was spent in only five months.
