FS health dept fails to pay striking doctors as promised | News Article

Bothaville - The Free State Health Department has failed to pay salaries it has been owing to some doctors for several months as promised today.

Spokesperson Tebogo Oepeng said yesterday the department was prioritising the matter and that more than 60 percent of those owed money, would be paid today. He said only sessional doctors contracted by the department - who are paid per session and are not permanent doctors - were affected. Oepeng said around 60% of them will receive a once-off payment on Thursday.

The Nala District Hospital, in Bothaville, was one of those affected. Three of its seven doctors are sessional.

Civil rights group, Afriforum's Johann Hattingh says the department has not contacted any of the affected doctors.

Hattingh says district hospitals in Welkom, Hoopstad and Wesselsbron are experiencing the same problem. Oepeng refused to comment on the matter when contacted by OFM News.
