Kgothule defamation of character case adjourned | News Article

Bloemfontein - The defamation of character case instituted against the Weekly Newspaper by former Free State Sports, Arts and Culture MEC Dan Kgothule adjourned in the Bloemfontein High Court yesterday.

During yesterday's proceedings, Danny Moleko, former Arts and Culture Director at the Free State Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, defended Kgothule and accused the Weekly of being unreasonable in the contested article. The story, published in August 2010, made allegations of mismanagement against Kgothule regarding the 2010 World Cup budget, Mmabana Cultural Centre, Macufe and Pacofs, among others.

Moleko admitted that the department faced a high vacancy rate when Kgothule was MEC which may have affected operations at the Mmabana Cultural Centre. He also acknowledged that the department received complaints that some Macufe service providers were not paid, but said a consortium was responsible for payments. He highlighted that when Kgothule was MEC, the department's funding and interaction with external stakeholders improved.

Kgothule’s lawyer Barnard Stander explained that the case was adjourned after the plaintiff closed the case.
