Buying textbooks reason for FS edu department's financial woes: MEC─── CATHY DLODLO 08:45 Fri, 31 Jul 2015
Bloemfontein - Free State Education MEC Tate Makgoe says buying textbooks for grade 8 and 9 learners during the previous financial year is the reason for his department's financial woes.
This is despite the fact that buying and delivering text books to schools in the province is one of his department's core responsibilities.
He was answering questions on why his department has not paid subsidies to schools in the province yet. Makgoe said his department's finances are being managed by provincial treasury and a decision was taken to hold off on the payments because of cash flow problems.
The department was placed under the care of provincial treasury because of accruals to the tune of R1.3b during the previous financial year.
Makgoe indicated that schools would receive their subsidies by August 19. He said it would take at least another year for his department to address its financial woes.
