Increasing salary bill eats into FS education budget | News Article

Bloemfontein - The increasing salary bill of the Free State Education department is part of the reason why the department is experiencing serious cash flow problems.

According to a treasury report the department’s expenditure on salaries increased steadily from 79.6% of its budget to 83.9% in the 2014/2015 financial year.

The report which was discussed during a meeting of the National Council of Province’s Finance Committee shows that the biggest chunk of the education budget in the province is going towards salaries.

Education MEC Tate Makgoe admitted in the provincial legislature last week that his department is experiencing serious cash flow problems and that it lead to the non-payment of subsidies to certain schools.

Meanwhile provincial treasury is looking into cost containment measures to address the department's financial woes.
