Women making waves in the mining sector | News Article

Bloemfontein - South Africa is ranked ahead of other countries in the mining industry in terms of bringing women into the workforce.

However women in the industry still face challenges, from a lack of suitable facilities and protective clothing to harassment. While research shows that the country’s mining industry ranks tops for gender diversity, there is still more that needs to be done for women to make their mark.

Smangele Mngomezulu from South African Women in Mining Investment Holdings (SAWIMIH), says more women are being encouraged to join the mining sector. She says it remains important to empower women in their respective industries.

SAWIMIH is an investment company formed in 2003 for women empowerment in the mining industry. It further seeks to empower black women in the mining sector by participating and investing in opportunities to create financial growth.
