Swazi girls: ‘Transport not even suitable for animals’ | News Article

Bloemfontein - According to the Spokesperson of the Swaziland solidarity Network (SSN) Lucky Lukhele the mode of transport used to ferry the Swazi maidens after cutting reeds for the annual Umhlanga Reed Dance in Swaziland is used to transport cement and soil, and not humans.

He further added the accident was bound to happen as the plight to provide better transport for the maidens has been a yearly request made to the Swazi king and his delegation. He says the Swazi government must be held accountable.

The Swaziland Solidarity Network says the death toll from a crash involving young maidens has risen to 65, after 38 died on the scene.

Lukhele adds that more 100 women were transported to hospital with various injuries. Reports suggest that police and the local media have been barred from reporting on the incident.
