HRC to follow up Qwaqwa evictions─── REFILWE GAESWE 16:35 Mon, 31 Aug 2015
Phuthaditjhaba - The Human Rights Commission says they have not received any progress report on evictions that took place last year at Bluegumbosch Farm in Qwaqwa.
Spokesperson Isaac Mangena says they will embark on a fact finding mission to Qwaqwa tomorrow to determine the progress made by the Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality in implementing their recommendations.
He says the visit follows the failure of the Department of Cooperative Governance, Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements to implement its recommendations after hundreds of people were evicted in June last year.
Mangena says they made specific recommendations with regard to the rights of those evicted, including children, pensioners and people with disabilities.
The commission recommended, amongst others, evicted persons should be provided with adequate alternative accommodation and access to basic services such as sanitation, water and refuse services and to supply the commission with a permanent relocation plan for those evicted.
