North West: 36 000 ghost workers drawing salaries | News Article

Potchefstroom - North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo revealed at a SCOPA meeting this morning that there are nearly 36 000 ghost workers in the province, who receive a monthly salary and benefits.

The problem seems to be of particular concern within the Departments of Education and Health. These two departments are currently under financial administration. DA spokesperson in North West, Chris Hattingh, says ghost officials are not new to the North West Provincial Government. He says in 2008 millions of rands were spent on consultants to develop a system that was supposed to eradicate the problem.

It was also learned that the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality, which was dissolved last year, had doubled its staff component. The Premier’s office said they would react to OFM's enquiries at a later stage.
