Calm restored in Mangaung following gang violence | News Article

Bloemfontein – Mangaung was calm on Friday following gang violence that claimed three lives in the past week, Free State police said on Friday.

Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thandi Mlambo said police investigations led to the arrest of 15 suspects. All the suspects appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court this week.

“Three suspects, Thamsanqa Ramahlele, Tsheyo Selebalo and Kgotso Sebonyane appeared in court on Monday in connection with the attempted murder case of a learner in Kopanong. They were denied bail,” said Mlambo.

Two others, Pakiso Nkunyana and Thamsanqa Mkubeni, appeared before the court in connection with an assault incident.

Another group of ten people, Thabiso Leeuw, Cavern Gemaine, Tshokolo Motsamai, Kgotso Shai, Vuyisile Mnyamane, Letshego Mafa, Mosiuwa Mokotjo, Moeketsi Makhele, Mohlopheki Nzimande and Tshepang Makgele, appeared in the same court for the alleged murder of tavern owner, Makgaola Seatile.

Seatile was attacked and killed allegedly by armed men last week.

In the other incidents, a Grade 11 pupil was stabbed to death at school. Also a person suspected of being a gang member was attacked allegedly by community members.

Three gangs, Born to Kill, Romans and Triple Six were reportedly linked to the violence.

The gangs had allegedly been threatening to kill pupils at various schools that they visited last week.

Provincial police commissioner Lt. General Thabethe Mpembe called on the community to work with police in stamping out violent crime in the area.

“The police will continue to maintain stability and ensure safety in Mangaung. The community should work with the police in identifying these youths that are affiliated to gangs, to ensure that they don’t return to terrorise the community,” Mpembe said.

“So far three deaths have been reported as a result of these gang related incidents.”

All the arrested suspects will appear in court again on 5 October.
