Glider crash was club's first in 16 years - chairperson | News Article

Potchefstroom - The crash that killed glider pilot William Scott on Sunday was the first in the 16-year history of the Potchefstroom club.

More than 1 000 flights take off from the Akavlieg Potchefstroom Gliding club every year and this was the first accident in over 16 000 flights, club chairperson, Johan Badenhorst, said on Tuesday.

Scott, 58, was on a pleasure flight returning from Orkney. He crashed 1.4km from the airfield as he was preparing to land. He had a wife of 29 years and a son.

He had been a member of the club for nine years and had notched up more than 250 flying hours. He bought his new glider several months ago.
