Welkom - Six people have been arrested and drugs worth half a million rand and suspected stolen gold were confiscated in three separate raids in Welkom over the past few days.

Free State police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, says in one incident police received a tip-off about suspicious activity in Riebeeckstad, Welkom. A 38-year-old Nigerian national was caught red-handed at a crack Lab found inside a rented room.

He said police seized 1.2 kilograms of raw ingredients, worth R500 000, used to manufacture cocaine rocks, 16 full moons, CAT and apparatus used to manufacture drugs.

In the second incident, Thakeng said officers received a tip-off about three Lesotho nationals who were illegally in possession of gold amalgam near the Saaiplaas mine. He said police found 500 grams of gold amalgam with a street value of R150 000.

Police also arrested two people for possession of illegal firearms, after they boarded a taxi headed to Kroonstad.

Thakeng said all six are expected to apply for bail in the local court on Monday.
