Fire raging at Hobhouse─── CHRISTAL-LIZE MULLER 12:51 Tue, 13 Oct 2015
Hobhouse - Farmers in the Hobhouse area in the Free State are battling to quell a fire that broke out at Klipfontein between Dewetsdorp and Hobhouse early last night.
Dewetsdorp Fire Protection Official, Johann Breytenbach, says farmers have been awake throughout the night to contain the blaze that was allegedly started by lightning. He says the fire, burning in a south-westerly direction from Hobhouse, was contained this morning but flared up again.
He adds the fire spreading in an easterly direction is still raging out of control and is being fuelled by strong winds.
According to him it is difficult to give an exact picture of the damage, but an estimated 15 000 hectares are believed to have been lost in this fire.
