Student group says it will make PUK ungovernable─── DANE BEISHEIM 15:42 Tue, 13 Oct 2015
Potchefstroom - The Totius Hall at the North West University's Potchefstroom Campus must be renamed to "Steve Biko Memorial Hall".
This was one of the demands by Reform PUK, a student group which handed over a memorandum of grievances and demands to the management of the university this afternoon.
During a reading of their manifesto, activist Ignatius Mokhatle said, among other things, that Afrikaans as a medium of instruction is used as an access barrier to keep out black students, that interpretation services for non-Afrikaans students is ineffective and marks students using it as outsiders, and that tuition fees are too high.
The group gave campus management seven days to respond to these and other issues, with Mokhatle saying failure to do so would leave them no choice but to make the campus ungovernable.
Vice Chancellor Dan Kgwadi said afterwards there were too many issues to address immediately but he agreed to provide feedback in the next seven days.
