Wheat tariff raised

Wheat tariff raised | News Article

Bloemfontein - The tariff for wheat being imported into South Africa has been nearly doubled in a bid to aid the flagging sector.

Landbou.com reports that South Africa’s International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC) last week announced the tariff will increase from R461 per ton to just over R800 per ton.

Agricultural economist Wessel Lemmer writes that recent international declines in wheat prices make it impossible for South African wheat producers to survive without a tariff to protect them.

He says the average amount wheat imported into South Africa between October 2014 and mid-June 2015 is just over 35 000 tons per week.
