Bloemfontein -  Former winner Carlos Sainz claimed the fourth stage of the Dakar Rally and the overall lead on after the fourth stage with defending champion Stephane Peterhansel of France in second.

Sainz, the 2010 Dakar champion, finished more than six minutes ahead of Peterhansel, an 11-time winner.

Qatar's Nasser Al-Attiyah, the 2011 victor, came home in third place on the stretch between San Juan to Chilecito.

It was Sainz's 26th career stage win on the gruelling event and gave him an overall advantage of 2 minute 6 seconds on overnight leader Nani Roma of Spain.

South Africa’s Geniel de Villiers finished the stage in seventh and remains in sixth overall, just 39 minutes 10 seconds off the pace.

Today’s 384km fifth stage runs North East from Chilecito to Tucumán.
