Bloemfontein -  The King of Clay, Rafael Nadal is in doubt for the years’ fourth and final Grand Slam.

With just three weeks until the US Open at Flushing Meadows, the nine-time French Open champion withdrew from the Toronto and Cincinnati Masters due to a wrist injury.

Nadal said he had injured his wrist during training and underwent an MRI scan.

"Unfortunately I injured my right wrist during practice and after the tests I have undergone in Spain, including an MRI, and checking with my doctors, I will have to stay out of competition for at least 2-3 weeks," said the 28-year-old world number two.

"I am sorry and wish the best to the tournament and thank all of the fans for their support.

"I'm extremely disappointed that I am unable to defend my titles and compete in Toronto and Cincinnati this year. I was looking forward to coming and playing again after my great results last year," he concluded.

The reigning champion at Flushing meadows has been advised by doctors to rest from competition for between two and three weeks.

Nadal hasn't played since his shock Wimbledon fourth round loss to Australian teenager Nick Kyrgios four weeks ago.

The US Open gets underway on 25 August.
