Bloemfontein - The national health department and its partners have embarked on an intensive medical male circumcision campaign which plans to get 4.3 million men circumcised by 2016.
A total of 6.2 million people in South Africa are living with HIV and health professionals say medical male circumcision can greatly reduce the percentage of new HIV infections.
Programme manager at the new circumcision clinic at Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein, Zama Bosch, says their clinic has seen an increase in male circumcisions.
According to Careworks HIV management, medical male circumcision reduces the risk of an HIV negative male contracting HIV by 60%.

It has also been linked to a reduction in prostate cancer and the risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases.
