Liewe Heksie's creator had 'an unflagging spirit' | News Article

Johannesburg - The creator of one of South Africa’s most beloved children’s characters has passed away following a battle against cancer.

Verna Vels, creator and voice of children’s character Liewe Heksie, as well as supervising producer for the popular Afrikaans soapie 7de Laan, has left deep marks in the hearts of countless South Africans.

Publicist Liby Nel says she had an unflagging spirit. The eighty-one-year-old was a huge inspiration and will be sorely missed.

Vels was born in Reitz in the Free State and also matriculated there.

According to Wikepedia, the first Liewe Heksie book was published in 1961. The story grew in popularity on radio and was also released on records, and later CDs. It continued to enchant children on TV after it debuted as a puppet show in 1978.
