Business as usual in Lesotho | News Article

Maseru - Lesotho defense forces say one soldier and four police officers were injured in an exchange of gunfire early this morning.

Defense force spokesperson Ntlele Ntoi told The Associated Press that after disarming police at two stations, the military returned to their barracks.

Ntoi denied reports of any attempt at a coup.

He said the military acted after gathering intelligence that the police were going to arm factions in a demonstration planned for Monday by one of the coalition parties, the Lesotho Congress for Democracy.

He said the military disarmed police to avoid bloodshed.

Meanwhile Michael Jordan, an American journalist based in Lesotho, says the situation has been calm in Maseru’s CBD this morning.
Jordan is a foreign correspondent and journalism teacher/trainer based in Lesotho with his wife and children.

Jordan, who works as a communications consultant in the country, has led various free HIV journalism workshops for underprivileged youth and trained local journalists on reporting about gender-based violence.
