Military action does amount to coup: Lesotho Prime Minister | News Article

Maseru - Lesotho's prime minister says he believes this morning's action by the military was in fact a coup attempt.

Tom Thabane told eNCA the army acted without his consent.

He says the incident is concerning.

Thabane says he expects that South Africa, as Lesotho's closest neighbour, will step in to assist.

Lesotho defense forces say one soldier and four police officers were injured in an exchange of gunfire early this morning.

Defense force spokesperson Ntlele Ntoi told The Associated Press that after disarming police at two stations, the military returned to their barracks.

He denied reports of any attempt at a coup.

He said the military acted after gathering intelligence that the police were going to arm factions in a demonstration planned for Monday by one of the coalition parties, the Lesotho Congress for Democracy.

He said the military disarmed police to avoid bloodshed.
