Lesotho's prime minister fled the country after suspected coup attempted─── 13:41 Sat, 30 Aug 2014
Maseru - Lesotho's prime minister has confirmed that he left the mountain kingdom for safety reasons after a suspected millitary coup attempt in the early hours of this morning.
Tom Thabane told eNCA that he believes this morning's action by the military was in fact a coup attempt, saying the army acted without his consent. He says the incident is concerning.
In June, the South African government expressed concern over the political situation in Lesotho after the suspension of the country's parliament.
This came a week after Thabane suspended the country's parliament for nine months.
Earlier in June, the Lesotho Congress for Democracy, a junior partner in the coalition, was reported to have strongly criticised Thabane for acting unilaterally and ignoring his coalition partners.
The political pact was formed in June 2012 after elections in Lesotho failed to produce a single party with a majority win of parliamentary seats.
