Lesotho's prime minister denies growing opposition to his party and coalition government | News Article

Maseru - Lesotho's prime minister, Tom Thabane, has denied that there is growing opposition to his party and the coalition government after a suspected coup attempt this morning.

Thabane told eNCA the coalition is functioning properly.

Thesele Maseribane, sports minister and leader of the Basotho National Party, accused deputy prime minister Mothetjoa Metsing, leader of the Lesotho Congress for Democracy, of involvement in the move to seize power.

Maseribane however insisted Thabane's government was still in control.

The LCD is part of a shaky coalition which has governed Lesotho since elections two years ago. But the party vowed months ago to form a new government and oust the premier.

In response, Thabane suspended parliament and so dodged a vote of no confidence.
