Cape Town - Seven buses were set alight and four others badly damaged in a protest in Nyanga, Cape Town, on Monday morning, Golden Arrow Bus Services (Gabs) said.
Gabs spokeswoman Bronwen Dyke said a mob pulled drivers out of two buses at the Nyanga Bus Terminus around 6am and set the vehicles alight.
From there, the crowd moved to Govan Mbeki Road, where four bus drivers were removed from their vehicles and assaulted. The buses were then set alight.
Dyke said the group damaged four buses but were stopped before they could set them on fire.
A bus driver was assaulted nearby and one more bus set alight.
It was believed the crowd could be protesting taxi drivers, said Dyke.
She said it was impossible to run bus services in Nyanga at this stage and buses were now operating from Borchards Quarry and the Manenberg police station.
