Malema in court: EFF to march in Polokwane─── 07:18 Tue, 30 Sep 2014
Polokwane - As Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema prepares to appear in court today, hundreds of his party members are expected to lead a march to the courthouse in Polokwane.
Malema’s supporters held a night vigil at a hall not far from his home in Seshego.
Some of the roads in Polokwane have already been closed off in anticipation of the large crowd.
The EFF says they hope Malema will put the allegations of criminal wrongdoing behind him once and for all.
The party says they will continue supporting the firebrand leader throughout the trial.
The proceedings are due to last until the end of this month, but it’s still unclear if Malema will ask for a postponement today.
He is facing charges of fraud and corruption and racketeering relating to a R59 million tender at the Department of Roads and Transport in 2009.
Malema has maintained he is innocent and says he will emerge from court victorious.
The march is expected to take place from the Nirvana Hall in Polokwane to the courthouse later this morning.
Meanwhile, Malema’s lawyer Tumi Mokwena says they're ready for the start of the trial.
There has been talk about a co-accused whose legal representatives are not available, so we don’t know what is happening, but we are ready for trial. Malema is eager to have the matter finalised.”
